| "The night ended at the Blender party, where Nellie McKay closed out the evening with a set starting at 2:15. Playing solo at the piano, McKay mixed a lot of standards (”That Old Devil Moon”) with a few originals, including my favorite, “Pounce.” Between numbers she kept her smile on while muttering passive-aggressive comments about the chattering industry types who far outnumbered the active listeners." |

Chrys pasted me a comment from another article that made Nellie's performance sound even worse:
| Quote: |
| Our evening wound down at a Blender-sponsored after-party. Nellie McKay was an odd choice for this post-1 a.m. time slot; she dashed onto the stage and began banging away at a rented grand piano, to the general indifference of the crowd. McKay might wow in a cabaret setting, but she's probably not the best entertainment at this hour for a room full of people who have been drinking and listening to rock'n'roll all day. |

I found it funny how in this review of Lily Allen's performance they compare it to 2004's Nellie performance even though Nellie was there this year too:
| Quote: |
| Backed by a three-man horn section, she fused calypso, polka and Professor Longhair funk with some of the funniest lyrics this side of 2004's SXSW buzz act, Nellie McKay. "Knock 'Em Out" was a brutal kiss-off to losers with bad pickup lines. "Alfie" was sisterly advice to her video-junkie little brother. |

I liked the quote in this blog post too (originally from Pitchfork). It feels like the most accurate one... There's a great picture too.
| Quote: |
Nellie's considerable talent was wasted at this gathering of cantankerous, drunken insiders, and Nellie knew it. But she tried to have fun with the unfavorable situation nonetheless, hauling a big book of jazz standards and some sheet music onstage and peppering a set of mostly pre-WWII fare and showtunes with a few of her own-- including the twee-as-fuck "Pounce", the closest anything came to a crowd-pleaser. Extra credit to Nellie for veiling a threat aimed at chatties in the back in the same cutesy tone she uses for every other proclamation. |

To the Pitchfork news page it's on (very long page):

Hopefully the image will work, it's direct linked to the one hosted by Pitchfork.

| I was at the Blender house and agree that the people at the back of the room were rude. She put on an amazing performance and has won over a new fan. I had never heard of her and was totally mezmerized by her performance. A great job, just wish everyone else there had the common decency to listen to her music, I'm sure a lot of people woould have felt the same as I do. |
Awesome. Glad you could rise above and appreciate the music Glad to have a new fan aboard! |

| Thanks MarkA for sharing! I was worried that it was a bad show and nobody got to enjoy her performance, glad to hear that it wasn't the case! Welcome Mark! |

I passed across a great write-up of the show by another attendant:
I liked this part...
| Quote: |
| ... but shortly after nellie started playing, we moved upstairs to the way back so at least we could actually see her. everybody else was still out of luck though - "we can't see you!" somebody shouted after the first few songs. "oh, well...i can't see you either," she responded. "maybe it's better that way, for both of us!" i'm not sure why i never realized before that she sounds (her speaking voice anyway) exactly like judy garland. though what she says is a lot brattier. anyway. so, she did "cupcake" and "lazy river" and a couple others from the new one (but not "columbia is bleeding," which i'd say is probably the highlight, nor "beecharmer" of course.) also "suitcase song" (yaay!) and "david." (i did shout out "i want to get married!", but if she heard me she probably didn't take me seriously.) ... |
Full write-up at: http://mincetapes.blogspot.com/2007/03/sxoxoxsw.html (scroll about 2/5's of the way down)
He also links to a Pitchfork write-up with some pictures from I guess another performance she did at SXSW, this time at Exodus in the early evening...
| Quote: |
| Nellie's early evening set was rife with mysteries. Such as: why did Nellie have a grand piano for her silly Blender party set (see Wednesday) and only an upright at her official SXSW showcase? Why did she start 20 minutes late? Why did the entire front row consist of asshole photographers who never once stopped taking pictures (says the asshole photographer, who swears he only took those you see here)? And why the hell did folks who waited in a block-long queue outside Exodus get inside only to chat through Nellie's entire set? Surely they weren't waiting for...Peaches?? |
Can see the pictures too at: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/41749-sxsw-report-friday-matthew-solarski
Checkout this picture and you'll see what they were talking about with the front row being all photographers!

Hot damn! That's awesome. Was starting tho think there wasn't going to be any recording from the show available online.
I really want to go out and buy some Absolut vodka now! (Anybody understand the Absolute Country of Sweden on the yellow Texas ad?)
Be warned that the volume on it is not level, so if you put it up when you're listening to Nellie there will be some very loud drums at the end. |

Nellie didn't play SXSW this year, but the media still compared other new artists who did play to her. it seems like since the first time she played SXSW many years ago, she really turned some heads in the Austin media.
It's a pity she doesn't seem to want to come back here. |

I'm pretty sure it just had to do with the setting. Even if you liked them, if you saw Led Zeppelin play I'm sure right after you wouldn't want to hear Coldplay. You'd want to rock out some more. It all came down to the audience here, and they just were not digging Nellie, which is based upon their music taste.
Mark A: Nice to hear you had a good time and are now a fan. How was the rest of the event and how'd you go (if you don't mind me asking of course)? |
