Bean, myself, and our +1 walked into this chill underground joint in NYC called Fat Cat. At first the scene was quiet, but we had no idea what was about to go down.

We ran into Howard, a nm.org member, and mingled for a while. We eventually all ended up in the private back room with Nellie. Her mother was the "bouncer" at the door dressed as a pirate. Howard ended up convincing her to play a few songs, which he sang with her in a very awesome duet. They sang Sari and a few other favorites. Afterwards, things got even more interesting when the microphone started to be passed around to the group of us in front of the room. People scatted, sang, did whatever they wanted while Nellie was playing the piano. Even Kevin Bacon's brother joined in on the fun and sang a little bit for us. This jam session was definitely the first highlight of the evening.

Afterwards, Nellie, Bean, Howard, our +1, and myself hung out at the bar for 30 minutes or so chit chatting and discussing this and that. At that point my memory begins fading. They had Delerium Tremens on tap and they were giving me them for free. I bought Nellie a beer and she challenged me to an arm-wrestling match, for a reason I can't remember.

All in all the night was totally fucking amazing. I am sure Bean and Howard and other will reply to this thread and post their own summarizations or point out the things that I missed or was wrong about!

Cheers to all who came! BOO to Liana.

Sorry for the weird tone of this post, it comes from my Last.FM journal:

I had the honor and pleasure of being able to go to the release party last night for Nellie McKay's new album (Pretty Little Head).
Under normal (Non-Nellie) circumstances, this would have been a really fun party ...free drinks and food, lots of great people, random halloween costumes, music....good stuff. But I got to meet Nellie...so that made it even better.

Now, I've been to several (4?) performances of hers before (The best one, by the way...definitly Irving Plaza in 2004(5?) ) am I'm really glad that last night wasn't really like that- it was MUCH more a party that happened to have Nellie and a piano in the room. She played a few songs of hers (with accompaniment from her friends and audience) and did a lot of covers and sing-alongs that included TONS of people doing skat(?) while they passed the mic around. I really wish I had moved up front to join-in, but I'm just too shy I guess. Either way, it was tremendous fun.

I got to talk to a bunch of really cool people- some from the fansite. Everyone was very nice.

I talked to Nellie several times- got a few pictures (which I'm currently waiting on...they're not on my own camera). The costume I wore last night was a nod to a costume Nellie wore once after a performance of Three Penny Opera. I got the same mask and had a ukulele...and had a cape, which was the best I could do on short notice. She thought it was very funny- I got several pictures of me and her in costume.

Nellie was very friendly to everyone last night- she knew most of the people in the room and was introducing everyone to each other and kept trying to get games to happen. Even for the people she didn't know (like me and my friends), she talked and listened to us as if we had known her for years. Truly gracious.

At the end of the night I talked to her a little bit before I had to leave and gave her a congratulatory poster (for breaking away from Columbia/Sony and for finally releasing the album).

Overall, it was a TON of fun.

Hey guys,
Liz sent me the pictures that she took, and that I took at the event with her camera.
I'll post them later tonight.

Lex, I mentioned that Liz, the girl in blue hair, was a space stewardess, and as for Nellie, I didn't hear what she said, but she reminds me of a British nurse/teacher.

In related news...I actually bought the CD today. Between finding a Hillary Clinton mask and running around lower manhattan yesterday, I had no time to actually buy it before going to the release party. I felt like such a hack Smile But now everything is ok.

i am truly speechless of what happened last night. it was incredible. singing with nellie was obviously the icing on the cake, but what a random and unexpected night of fun meeting great people. i plan on writing a little review as well but right now i have some much needed rest to catch up on.

Awww, I'm happy for all of you. (It took a lot of energy to come up with that.)

There is no emoticon for green with envy.

I uploaded pictures of the Halloween event.
I have a few more to upload from two concerts in 2004.

I am awaiting the admin to approve them (the album party ones) and post them.
Hopefully more pictures will be added from others.

Paul, post a picture of your costume - I snapped the original!
Surely Nellie's costume was Salvation Army chic? Those glasses... very "Sally Ann"... We had a Salvation Army up the road from primary school and ALL the kids looked like that(!)
You lucky sausages in NYC! Nellie should come have a record launch in London too - there's lots of dingy pubs and salvation armies...

Quick comment :
The name of the club was called the Fat Cat. I really liked that cause that's the nick name of my two oldest cats.

I think Chrys/Bean should have a pets page in the Photo Gallery.

We're going to keep the main sections of the website Nellie-related. You should create a thread in the Kitty Litter Tray asking people to post pics of their pets Smile

The warm temperatures and the knowledge that a vast numbers of Republicans would soon be out of office filled the air with a wonderful energy as I made my way through the Village Halloween Parade to Fat Cat for Nellie’s Pretty Little Head release party.

I arrived shortly after 9PM and was told to go down a long flight of stairs and to the right to the private room. Seated outside the room behind a cocktail table was a rather imposing looking pirate who asked me from whence I came. Satisfied with the answer, she stamped my hand three times with “MEAT IS DEAD” before mysteriously producing a roll of drink tickets, recommending the stout and allowing me to enter the room.

I was pleased to see a somewhat dilapidated piano and various other instruments stationed at one end of the elongated room. The remainder of the room was lined with a collage of reclaimed furniture soon to be occupied with an equally eclectic mix of invitees. Only about half a dozen other denizens had thus far arrived and were chatting with an immaculately coiffed Salvation Army Sister, Nellie McKay. Nellie pulled off the look wonderfully as she distributed supportive Vegan literature from a basket and encouraged people to drink more heavily and praise Jesus.

At intersections throughout the room stood large platters of the ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS Vegan Sole Chicken Nellie has oft commented on during her shows. An hour or two and a drink or two into the evening, people started to congregate in the area of the piano. Not really wanting to perform, but not wanting to disappoint, Nellie lead a set of improvisation around a number of her songs and standards. It was interesting to see her be the master of ceremonies over this Warhol-like experiment and to prod and play with the crowd. Such a gift

The songs ranged from Sari to an aborted John John, Cupcake to Pennies From Heaven. When the music ended with a bouncy Pounce, the crowd dispersed with the exception of a queue of well wishers lined up in front of Nellie. At this point, her Dad put on Pretty Little Head for the first time in the evening. (This and CD posters blown through out the room were the only hints that this was even a release party.)

As it was approaching 1AM, I nodded farewell to Colonel Parker and made my way back up to the street where the parade was also dissolving into waves of fond memories

Thx again to Nellie, .org and all those who made this event such a wonderful evening

That should really upset Liana. She not only missed seeing Nellie, she also missed seeing the brother of her favorite actor/musician. Razz

I wish I could see her live.. it'd be awesome! But I live in Columbus, Ohio and nobody good comes here. I read she got booed here when she opened for Alanis Morisette.. how lame. I wish I could go to something like that halloween party and meet her! You guys (and girls) looked like you had an awesome time.
